    Ambulance Crash #2

There has been another fatal collision involving an ambulance today. The ambulance, carryng an already critically ill patient, apparetly skidded on the wet road and crashed into a power pole today. Sadly, the patient died at the scene. One ambulanceman is still in hospital.

Whilst the initial investigation has already been conducted, we still don't know whether the crash directly caused the patients death.
Police continue to investigate if the crash of an ambulance in Northland today contributed to the death of a patient it was carrying.

That's terrible. It seems like it ought be much rarer. The sort of thing you'd scoff at for being unrealistically unlucky if it happened in a movie. Thinking on it, I suppose it could be difficult for ambulance drivers to find the balance between driving safely and driving fast enough to save the person in the back.

Is that ambulance drivers that are facing those charges? Or people failing to pull over for them?

You can't even blame the drivers for recklessness
Unfortunately, accidents involving ambulances happen quite frequently and a large number of drivers have been charged with reckless driving, reckless endangerment and negligent homicide. In 2010, the latest figures available, there were 264 accidents involving ambulances. A total of 99 people were killed in ambulance crashes between May 2007 and April 2009.

A few instances within the last few years can be read here, here, here, here, here, here and here.
