  • Zika Virus Transmitted In United States

There is the first confirmed case of someone becoming infected by the Zika virus in the United States. The individual contracted the disease via sexual contact with someone who had traveled outside of the country. The report comes on top of other confirmed incidents of people returning to the US with the disease. Details on this story may be read here.

Let's just hope that the woman doesn't get pregnant. It's just terrible how Zika affects unborn babies and fetuses. No one - not even doctors and scientists - really knows how Zika triggers microcephaly but most pregnant women who contracted Zika gave birth to children with small heads and, in majority of cases, damaged brains.

What is interesting (and a little bit frightening) is that the virus can be transmitted through a variety of ways. The most common vector may be the bite of a mosquito, but the fact that it is also transmissible by sexual intercourse goes on to show how much of a health hazard it can be in countries like the USA, where an average man has intercourse two to three times per week.
