The following websites provide a wealth of information regarding hurricane preparedness and safety. Hopefully you find these of use to you.

    http://www.ready.gov/hurricanes
    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php
    https://www.osha.gov/dts/weather/hur...paredness.html
    http://www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/hurricane
    http://www.weather.com/safety/hurricane

Have you ever experienced a hurricane? It is my understanding, and please correct me if I am wrong, that hurricanes in Kenya are very uncommon.

It depends on where you are located. Flooding problems because of the rain can affect areas inland depending on the storms path and the capacity of the local rivers and streams. I would say go as far as you can. If you are driving your own car, leave ahead of the rush and pick a destination several hours drive away where you can find some inexpensive activities to do while you wait for the storm to pass.
