  • India launched SMS-based weather alert system

The Indian Meteorological Department has released an sms-based weather alert system to the public for disseminating natrual disaster information. The IMD will send weather alter SMS to individuals who register themselves at the weather forecaster's official website at WWW.imd.gov.in.

Sounds like a plan. So who is picking up the bill? The government? The service providers? Perhaps the cost of the system can be parlayed with advertising. I don't mean sending ads in times of emergencies. Perhaps the ads can be sent, in reasonable proportions, in times when there is no emergency.

It is my understanding that the government is footing the bill for this SMS messaging system.

The Times of India provides some more information on the program and how it will hopefully work.

Yes, the government is paying up. But it's a nice initiative. With Mr. Modi at the helm, we have many more good surprises to come!

Have you registered on the website to receive these alerts? If so, how easy was the sign up process?
